Ile de la Déception
L’île de la Déception est une caldeira située à une centaine de km au nord de la péninsule Antarctique, dans l’archipel des îles Shetland du Sud. Le port naturel de l’île, Port Foster, doit son apparition à l’effondrement, il y a 10 000 ans, d’un ancien volcan dont le cratère est aujourd’hui baptisé « Souffle de Neptune ».
Au début 19ème siècle, elle fut le refuge des marins souhaitant attendre la fin des tempêtes de l’océan Austral, mais aussi de ceux désireux de patienter pendant le passage d’icebergs. Longtemps animée par une importante activité baleinière, l’île abrite aujourd’hui une importante colonie d’éléphants de mer. Quelques vestiges des anciennes bases baleinières sont encore visibles.
Le jour de notre arrivée la neige venait de tomber, conférant à cette île volcanique une mélancolie profonde et des contrastes parfaits, dignes d’images en noir et blanc.
